It's been 20 years and Harry Dunn has found something out - he has a daughter! Lloyd Christmas, his equally dim witted friend, takes one look at a picture of her, develops a crush, and insists the two track her down. What ensues when Harry finally agrees is a bizarre encounter with an old lady and more hilarity because of their sheer stupidity. Written by Xeokym

The Farrelly Brothers
Just When I thought You Couldn’t Get Any Funnier, You Go and Make a Sequel…And TOTALLY…Sucked.
In , the Farrelly Brothers re-team with Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels 20 years after the original. Once again we join Harry and Lloyd in a road movie of moronic proportions. This adventure has them driving to El Paso to meet up with Harry’s illegitimate daughter in hopes of her donating a kidney to save the ailing Harry. Several new cast of characters including the new go to comedy utility player Rob Riggle. I was surprised to see Kathleen Turner and shocked to see the level of abuse she was willing to take in relation to her physical appearance in her role as Fraida Felcher.
I can remember sitting in the theater 20 years ago, seeing the original Dumb and Dumber and laughing till I rolled out of my seat. After hundreds of home video viewings, Dumb and Dumber’s dialogue became part of my regular day to day conversation. Next to Caddyshack (1980), Office Space (1999) and Anchorman (2004), I doubt you could name a more quoted comedy classic. This movie is not only a pop phenomenon, it also registers as a cult classic. So there is a good degree of nostalgia and expectations that are at unreachable levels in making a sequel. Coupled with the fact that this is the first sequel the Farrelly Brothers have ever done. Jim Carrey has only done one other sequel, Ace Ventura 2: When Nature Calls (1995). Dumb and Dumber To is about on par with Ace 2. A few good chuckles but none of the magic and re-watchability of the original. Recycled jokes that you see coming from miles away, and new shock value gross out jokes that just fall flat. I can’t say I expected anything more. The Farrelly’s have been hit or miss for years. For every Kingpin (1996) and There’s Something About Mary (1998) bit of awesomeness, there is a Osmosis Jones (2001) and Three Stooges (2012) as contrastingly horrible. The cast and Farrelly’s have been on a world wind tour to promote this film heavily, BEFORE the release date. As if to drum up enough publicity to ensure a big opening weekend, before word of mouth spreads about its mediocrity. Jennifer Lawrence has said in may interviews that the original Dumb and Dumber is her favorite comedy. When word of the sequel hit she signed on to do a cameo. Rumor has it after screening the film and her clip she had her scene pulled. The great Bill Murray also has a cameo in Dumb 2, he is almost impossible to recognize; he wears a mask and his line is muffled. Perhaps more was shot but Bill felt the same way as Jennifer. The soundtrack is descent, The Farrelly’s must be fans of Empire of the Sun, having used their music previously in Hall Pass (2011)
I found myself sitting in the theater after the movie rolled asking, did I just get older or was it just not that funny? Had two decades of quoting and loving the original killed any opportunity for me to enjoy this? If you do see the film, wait till after the credits for a quick bit with one of the originals most notorious characters. Its not funny but if you don’t walk out might as well go for all of it. The moral to this misadventure is that its near impossible to recreate the magic of the original if the film is not part of a series of preplanned films. Word is that the Cohen Brothers are in talks to do a Big Lebowski 2. The Cohen’s and Farrelly’s are almost parallel in their hit or miss body of work. Hopefully they learn a lesson from Dumb 2 and reconsider some things.
Ugh. I knew it wouldn’t be good — but I didn’t realize how bad it would be. Ouch. Guys … sometimes you need to let the past be the past. During the entire movie I was reminded of an out-take from Liar Liar … “Overactor!” From Jim Carrey exaggerating this arms while walking to the over-the-top cross-eyes from Jeff Daniels, this was simply painful to watch.
This morning Matt and I watched the original Dumb and Dumber to make sure we’re weren’t judging this movie differently now that we are older (and wiser perhaps?) Nope. We’re not wiser … this sequel is really as bad as it looks. The sequel just tried too hard. The jokes are pushy. The storyline lame. And did I mention the overacting? What made Dumb and Dumber great was that it seemed to be unexpected. I don’t think they expected it to be one of the best quotable movies of all time. Who would have predicted “Austria! Beautiful … let’s put another shrimp on the barbie” would be something we would quote for over two decades? It’s crazy – but we did. It wasn’t forced.
Dumb and Dumber To tried to force one-liners on us. Ain’t nobody got time for that.
In my opinion, the big underlying challenge with this movie is that they made Lloyd and Harry idiotic, instead of dumb. That may seem like a thin line, but it’s noticeable. Watch Dumb and Dumber again — while they made dumb moves their characters weren’t completely out of it. They acted like young children who were trying to be cool adults between annoying sounds and chuckling at Flo the waitress. Dumb and Dumber To made Lloyd and Harry out to be completely off the planet. They’re characters did not bring the same heart we loved about them 20 years ago.
It’s just bad. Don’t spend your money at the theatre. Don’t rent it. Wait until you can catch it on Netflix or Comedy Central when nothing else is on. Keep living the Dumb and Dumber of the 90s … it was a lot funnier.
