Alejandro González Iñárritu
Some days you eat the bear, and some days, the bear eats you.
In the Revenant Leonardo DiCaprio plays Hugh Glass a frontiersman and fur trader who is mauled by a bear and left for dead by his group. Glass makes a painful journey across miles of frozen tundra to rejoin his group against all odds and make things right.
Revenant is a spectacularly epic film. It’s a true survivalist story that is so immersive you feel the pain and bone chilling winter of every step. This is truly the year of Leonardo DiCaprio, one of the best actors of his or any generation for that matter. With last years Best Director and Best Picture creator of Birdman (2014) Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu how could he not win. The authenticity of this film has a feel like none other. The cast is spectacular, Tom Hardy as John Fitzgerald is about as great a supporting performance as one can deliver. Although I do look forward to getting an opportunity to watch this film again with subtitles, some of Hardy’s regional dialect is indecipherable.
I was also glad to see Will Poulder in a dramatic role. He was hilarious in We’re the Millers (2014), this film shows he has comedy and drama down making him a very versatile actor. I was reminded a lot of Riddley Scott’s Gladiator; although this movie takes its action to a far more graphic and visceral level. Not since The Edge (1997) with Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin have I seen such a great survivalist film. The cinematography in this movie is jaw dropingly beautiful. This film has an artistry and tone that has a lasting effect after the movie is over. Some may venture to say that its pacing lags, but I feel it was very appropriately paced out. I will warn the less than patient viewer this may not be the movie for you. Although if you are ready to be transported to a very violent and turbulent time in early frontier America, with two of the most talented actors at the top of their game. All directed by a multi Oscar nominated director; this is one of the best films to watch this award season.
